Crocodilians have large, thick scales on their back which are usually called "scutes", rather than scales. Unlike the typical reptilian scales on the rest of the body, the scutes are thick layers of keratin which are not folded. The keratin is supported by plates of dermal bone. Thus, scutes contain products from both the dermis and epidermis.
