Chromatophores are the pigment cells of the vertebrate skin. They may contain red, yellow or a reflective (silvery) pigment. Chromatophores which contain a black or brown pigment are called melanophores. Note how skin color can change as pigment is concentrated or dispersed within the melanophores of the rainbow lizard.
