Bird wings consist of long feathers which support the bird in the air. The skeleton of wings consists of a highly modified hand in which several carpals and three metacarpals (M) have fused into a single bone, the carpometacarpus. This bone plus three short digits forms the major skeletal support of the wing. The longest wing feathers are attached to the carpometacarpus, while the shorter feathers attach to the ulna. |
