August 29-September 2, 2016Dr. Zhang attended the 17th IUAPPA World Clean Air Congress and 9th CAA Better Air Quality Conference, Busan, South Korea.  She gave an oral presentation on WRF-CAM5 Modeling.

August 8-26, 2016 Dr. Zhang visited Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University (ZJU), the Institute of Atmospheric Research (IAP), and China National Environmental Monitoring Center (CNEMC) to discuss potential collaboration.  She also gave a seminar and introduce our research at IAP, CNEMC, and ZJU.

October 05 -07, 2015Dr. Zhang, Chaopeng and Khairunnisa attended the 14th Annual CMAS Conference in Chapel Hill, NC.  She gave an oral presentation on Development and Application of a Technology-Driven Earth System Model to Link Energy, Emissions, Air Quality, and Climate Change. Chaopeng gave a poster presentation titled 

"Comprehensive Evaluation of WRF/Chem-MADRID for Real-Time Air Quality Forecasting for Multiple Years over the Southeastern United States Using Observations from Surface Networks and

Satellites", and Khairunnisa gave a poster presentation titled "Downscaling CESM using WRF/Chem: Decadal Application for Regional Air Quality and Climate Modeling over the U.S. under the Representative Concentration Pathway Scenarios".

Dr. Hongquan Song, An Assistant Professor from Henan University, has joined AQFL for 1-yr visit to collaborate with members in AQFL on dust emission modeling.

AQFL hosted visit of Ms. Lili Zhu and Ms. Ning lu from China National Environmental Monitoring Center (CNEMC).  They participated the air quality modeling training program designed by Dr. Zhang and met a number of members in AQFL including Dr. Kai Wang, Dr. Patrick Campbell, Dr. Kai Duan, Ms. Jian He, Ms. Khairunnisa Yahya, and Mr. Chaopeng Hong to discuss relevant research projects.  They also met all members in AQFL on Sept. 18 (See photo) and gave two seminars on the research programs and activities at CNEMC.

Dr. Zhang attended the 7th International Workshop on Air Quality Forecasting Research (IWAQFR), College Park, MD.  She gave an oral presentation on Multi-Year Application and Evaluation of WRF/Chem-MADRID for Real-Time Air Quality Forecasting over Southeastern United States.

Dr. Zhang attended the third Annual Meeting of the NSF, DOE and USDA jointly sponsored Earth System Modeling (EaSM) activity, Bethesda, MD, U.S.  She gave two oral presentations to report progress on our EaSM projects co-sponsored by U.S. NSF, USDA and DOE.

Ms. Jian He, a PhD student of AQFL, successfully passed the final examination for her PhD degree. Jian is co-advised by Dr. Yang Zhang and Ruoying He. Her PhD dissertation title is Development and Evaluation of Earth System Models on Global and Regional Scales: Aerosol Chemistry and Dynamics, Air-Sea Interactions, and Retrospective Decadal Applications.

August 02-07, 2015 Dr. Zhang and Khairunnisa Yahya attended the 12th Annual Meeting of the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS), August 02-07, 2015, Singapore. Dr. Zhang gave an invited presentation on WRF-CAM5 application over East Asia and co-chaired a session Air Quality Modeling and Monitoring.  Khairunnisa Yahya received the best poster award for her presentation entitled the Evaluation for Multi-Year Simulations of WRF/Chem over Continental U.S. and Impacts of Emissions and Boundary Conditions on Air Quality and Meteorology.  See photo
July 29-August 4, 2015Dr. Zhang visited several universities in Thailand.  She gave a seminar at Chulalongkorn University and met Dr. Surat Bualert, Dean of Faculty, at Kasetsart University and Dr. Achariya Suriyawong at Chulalongkorn University (see photo) to explore potential opportunities for collaboration. See photo
August 5-August 6, 2015Dr. Zhang and Khairunnisa Yahya visited National Environment Agency to explore potential opportunities for collaboration and both gave a seminar on regional air quality/climate modeling.  They also visited the National University of Singapore and met Dr.  Rajasekhar Balasubramanian (See photo) to discuss current status of air quality studies in Singapore and potential collaboration opportunities.   Dr. Zhang also visited Nanyang Technological University and met Dr. Richard Webster (See photo) to learn the PM measurements by his group in the past five years and to explore potential collaboration opportunities.  In addition, Dr. Zhang met Dr. Chien Wang, MIT, who has been a key project PI under the SMART program at Singapore to discuss research activities and collaborations of mutual interest.

Dr. Zhang visited Tsinghua university and met Dr. Jiming Hao, the president of the National Academy of Engineering of China, Dr. Kebin He, the Dean of the School of Environment, and Dr. Shuxiao Wang, the Director of Atmospheric Research Institute to review progress for ongoing collaborative projects and discuss collaborative proposals.  See photo.

July 24, 2015Dr. Zhang visited the IBM Research in Beijing, China and gave a seminar to introduce
Atmospheric/Earth System Modeling Program at NCSU.  She also met Dr. Shuai Zhu, a former post-D researcher who works as a research scientist at the IBM, China.

Ms. Jian He, a PhD student, and Dr. Patrick Campbell, a post-D researcher, attended at the Annual Meeting of A&WMA, June 22-25, 2015, Raleigh, NC.  Jian gave a poster presentation entitled Multi-Year Comprehensive Evaluation of WRF-CAM5 over East Asia. Dr. Campbell gave a poster presentation entitled Impacts of Changes in Emissions from the Transportation Sector on Future U.S. Air Quality in a Changing Climate.

Dr. Zhang attended the 2015 AEESP Research and Education Conference, June 13-16, New Haven, Connecticut. She gave an oral presentation on the Decadal Simulations of Air Quality, Climate, and Their Interactions using the Community Earth System Model over globe and downscaled WRF/Chem over Continental U.S.

May 11- 16, 2014 Dr. Zhang attended the DOE’s Integrated Climate Modeling PI meetingPotomac, MD.
She presented a poster on Multi-Year Simulation of Aerosol Indirect Effects using 
WRF-CAM5 with Improved Aerosol‐Cloud‐Precipitation Representations
She also met two project co-PIs, Drs. Ruby Leung and Jiwen Fan at the meeting and discussed the next step of work for our project.  See photo 
Jan. 27-29, 2014 Dr. Zhang attended the 2014 Annual NSF/USDA/DOE EaSM PI Meeting, Jan. 27-29, 2014, Washington DC. She had two oral presentations and two posters on our NSF/USDA EaSM project and DOE EaSM project. She also met two project co-PIs, Dr. David Streets, ANL, and Dr. Ge Sun, USDA at the meeting to discuss our current and future work as well as upcoming proposal development activities.
December 3-7, 2012 Dr. Brett Gantt attended the 45th American Geophysical Union Annual Fall Meeting, San Francisco, CA and gave a presentation based on his PhD thesis research.
2012 Tim Glotfelty received a travel award ($) from AMS to attend the 93rd American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting and give an oral presentation
November 12-13, 2012 Dr. Ruby Leung, a Laboratory Fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, visited AQFL for a collaborative project.  She gave a departmental seminar on Mega-Droughts of the Future: The Role of Biosphere-Atmosphere Feedbacks and also attended our 3rd semi-annual project meeting.

October 22, 2012 Dr. Alexander Baklanov, Deputy Director of the Danish Strategic Research Centre for Energy,
Environment and Health, the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) visited AQFL/MEAS and gave a departmental seminar.  All members of AQFL each also gave a brief presentation on their research work. Drs. Zhang and Baklanov discussed ongoing collaboration and topics of potential collaborations (see photo).
Dr.  Baklanov also had a Pizza lunch with graduate students in MEAS (see photos).
October 15-17, 2012 Tim Glotfelty (a PhD student) and Xin Zhang (a Master student) from AQFL attended the 11th Annual CMAS Conference in University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Tim gave an oral presentation on the impact of changes in climate and emission on global air quality using GU-WRF/Chem.   Xin gave a poster presentation on the application of WRF/Chem over East Asia.
October 9-12, 2012 Wei Wang (a visiting scholar from Chinese Academy of Science) and Dr. Qi Fan (a visiting professor from Sun Yat-Sen University, China) attended the 31th Annual AAAR conference.  Wei gave an oral presentation on source appointment of fine particles and Prof. Fan gave a poster presentation on 3-D CMAQ application over the Pearl Delta River region.

Tim Glotfelty (a PhD student), from AQFL, attented the 17th Annual CESM Workshop in Breckenridge, CO.
May 23- August 10, 2012 Tim Glotfelty (a PhD student), from AQFL, visited NCAR under Advanced Studies Program (ASP) Fellowship in Boulder, CO. His research focuses on completing the NUDAPT implementation into WRF, mapping urban canopy parameters to local climate zones in the WRF model, and other aspects of fine scale modeling.
April 4-6, 2012 Dr. Yang Zhang, visited Brookhaven National Laboratory and explored potential collaboration with colleagues and gave a presentation entitled WRF/Chem Model Development and Application: Urban Pollution, Global Warming, and Earth System Degradation
March 27-28, 2012 Dr. Rabin Bhattarai, a post-Doctoral researcher from AQFL, gave an oral presentation entitled Potential impacts of climate and land use change on water quantity and quality in North Carolina at the 14th Annual Water Resources Research Institute Conference, Raleigh, NC.
March 20, 2012 Ashley Penrod, an MS student from AQFL, presented a poster entitled Future Air Quality: Degradation or Improvement due to Climate and Emissions? at the 7th Annual NC State University Graduate Student Research Symposium, McKimmon Center, NCSU, Raleigh, NC
December 5-9, 2011 Dr. Kai Wang, a post-Doctoral researcher from AQFL, presented a poster entitled Modeling gas-phase glyoxal and associated secondary organic aerosol formation in a megacity using WRF/Chem at the AGU Fall Meeting, San Francisco, CA.
Oct. 24-26, 2011 Nan Zhang (an MS student) and Tim Glotfelty (a PhD student), from AQFL, attended the 10th Annual CMAS Conference, Chapel Hill, NC. Nan presented a poster entitled Forecasting O3 and PM2.5 during Summer and Winter with WRF/Chem-MADRID over the Southeastern United States. Tim presented a poster entitled Implementing NUDAPT Urban Canopy Parameters for 44 cities in WRF.
Oct. 12, 2011 The Earth System Modeling Project Kickoff Meeting was held successfully at NCSU from 11 am-5 pm on Oct. 12, 2011. This is a 4-year project jointly sponsored by NSF and USDA under the research program entitled Decadal and Regional Climate Prediction using Earth System Models established by NSF, USDA, and US DOE. It is a collaborative effort among NCSU, ANL, and USDA Forest Service to estimate the decadal impacts of global climate changes on the global-through-urban earth system, including air quality, water supply, and forest carbon and nitrogen cycles, using an innovative technology-driven earth system model in support of air quality and agro-ecosystem policy analyses and management planning. A total of 21 project team members attended the meeting including the four project co-PIs (Yang Zhang of NCSU, David Streets of ANL, and Steve McNulty and Ge Sun of USDA Forest Service), two project co-Is (Eric Sills of NCSU and Peter Caldwell of USDA, Forest Service), four post-Doctoral fellows (Fang Yan of ANL and Shuai Zhu, Kai Wang, and Rabin Bhattarai of NCSU), and 11 graduate students (Changjie Cai, LeeAnna Chapman, Yaosheng Chen, Tim Glotfelty, Masilin Gudoshava, Jian He, Ashley Penrod , Wei Wang, Khairunnisa Yahya, Nan Zhang, and Xin Zhang), see photos for the project team (see photo) and during the meeting (see photos). The team members bring together expertise in atmospheric sciences, energy/emissions, hydrology, forest/agri-ecosystem, and computer sciences to tackle the grand challenges in simulating the Earth system processes and interactions among atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere, aiming at reducing the uncertainties in climate predictions identified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the U.S. National Research Council (NRC). The four co-PIs each gave a presentation outlining objectives and scope of work for respective technical areas (see photos)
Oct. 6-7, 2011 Dr. Yang Zhang, gave invited presentation on WRF/Chem Modeling Activities at NCSU at the COST Action ES1004 (EuMetChem) Technical Committee Meeting, Kos Island, Greece
Sept. 29-30, 2011 Dr. Shuai Zhu, a team leader of our Earth System Modeling Project, offered
two tutorial sessions on NCAR's Community Earth System Model (CESM) to our group members.
All the project team members attended and gained some hands-on experience on CESM.
Sept. 29, 2011 Dr. Rabin Bhattarai, recently graduated with a PhD degree in Soil and Water Resources Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, joined our group as a post-doctoral fellow to study the impact of global change on hydrology and ecosystem. Dr. Bhattarai, welcome!
Sept. 26-28, 2011 Dr. Zhang attended a Panel Review at the NSF (see photo). She took this opportunity to meet several Project Directors including Dr. Jay Fein from Climate and Large-Scale Dynamics Division (see Photo) and Drs. Alex Pszenny (right) and William Keene (left) from Atmospheric and Geospace Science Division (see Photo) to thank their great support and discuss some project- and program-related issues.
Sept. 18-21, 2011 Dr. Zhang attended the DOE's Climate and Earth System Modeling PI meeting in DC and presented a poster entitled Towards Improved Aerosol-Cloud-Precipitation Representations ina Coupled Climate-Aerosol Model: Some Preliminary Results.
Sept. 13-16, 2011 Dr. Zhang co-authored a presentation entitled Comparison of Exposure Estimation Methods for Air Pollutants: Ambient Monitoring Data and Regional Air Quality Modeling,
the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) 2011 conference,Barcelona, Spain.
August 17-20, 2011 A former member of AQFL, Dr. Ming-Tung Chuang gave an oral presentation on air quality forecasting entitled "PM2.5 Real-time Forecasting over the Southeastern United States with WRF/Chem-MADRID" that was based on his work performed at AQFL at the 7th Asian Aerosol Conference, Xian, China.
August 17, 2011 Six new members, Changjie Cai, Jian He, LeeAnna Young, Khairunnisa Yahya, Masilin Gudoshava, and Xin Zhang joined AQFL for their graduate studies. They came from diversified backgrounds including atmospheric science, marine sciences, natural resource/ecological sciences, chemical engineering, and computer sciences. Their research will involve some aspects of Earth system modeling to study interactions among atmosphere, hydrosphere (including both fresh water systems and oceans), biosphere, and lithosphere that requires interdisciplinary background and learning.
August 15, 2011 The NCSU Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Department 1st Annual Graduate Student Symposium was held in Jordan Hall. Ms. Ashley Penrod attended the symposium ans presented a poster entitled "3-D Agricultural Air Quality Modeling: The State of the Science, Fine-Scale Applications, and Policy Implications Part II: Impacts of Future Climate and Emissions on Air Quality".
June 1 - August 7, 2011 Tim Glotfelty (a PhD student), from AQFL, was part of an NCAR Advanced Studies Program (ASP) Fellowship in NCAR Boulder, CO. His research focuses on implementing the urban canopy parameters from the National Urban Database and Access Portal Tool (NUDAPT) into the WRF model.
May-August, 2011 Dr. Kai Wang visited NCAR during this summer. His summer research focuses on improving the capability of WRF/Chem in predicting glyoxal and its associated SOA formation by updating the gas-phase yields of glyoxal and implementing the SOA formation in the aqueous aerosol phase. The updated version of WRF/Chem is assessed over the Mexico City and the surrounding region during March 2006 using the MILAGRO campaign data
August 1-5, 2011 Dr. Yang Zhang visited the Atmospheric Chemistry Division and Research Applications Laboratory, National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, CO. She gave an invited seminar on WRF/Chem Model Development and Application: from Urban Pollution to Global Climate Change. She discussed an ongoing collaboration on the improvement of secondary organic aerosol model in WRF/Chem with Drs. Mary Barth and Alma Hodzic who hosted an AQFL PhD student, Mr. Kai Wang's visit during summer 2011. She also discussed another ongoing collaboration on the incorporation of high-resolution urban land-use, building morphology, and anthropogenic heating data using the National Urban Database and Access Portal Tool (NUDAPT) into WRF urban models with Dr. Fei Chen who hosted an AQFL MS student, Mr. Tim Gloftfelty 's visit during summer 2011 together with Dr. Jason Ching, a visiting scientist from CMAS, NC who supervised Tim's research at NCAR. She discussed with these scientists on potential opportunities to continue ongoing research work and explore new areas of collaborations. On August 3, she visited the forest experimental site during the summer intensive field campaign under the NCAR Biosphere Exchange of Energy, Aerosols, Carbon, H2O, Organics, and Nitrogen (BEACHON) program. Aug 1-5, 2011 Dr. Shuai Zhu attended the CESM tutorial held in National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, CO.
August 1-2, 2011 Dr. Yang Zhang gave an invited keynote speech entitled "Modeling Transport, Chemistry, and Climatic Impacts of Particulate Matter at Regional and Global Scales: Model Capabilities, Deficiencies, and Uncertainties" at the 2011 Bouyoucos Conference on Synchrotrons for Soils, Estes Park, CO. and discussed with a number of scientists in soil sciences on potential collaborations and joint proposal efforts. June-July, 2011 Dr. Yang Zhang visited seven universities in China, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Guangxi Normal University, Sun Yat-sen University, the South China University of Technology (SCUT), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU), and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKST) . She gave seven invited seminars on different topics and discussed ongoing and potential collaborations with colleagues at these universities. June 20-24, 2011 Dr. Kai Wang attended 12th WRF Users's Workshop held in Bouler, CO and he gave a presentation entitled "Simulating the April 2001 Asian dust storm episode with WRF/CMAQ: Dust module development and initial application".
June 15-18, 2011 Dr. Yang Zhang gave an invited presentation entitled “Impact of Regional Climate/Emission Changes on Air Quality over U.S.: Concentration, Deposition, and Visibility” and cochair one technical session at the 8th International Conference on Acid Deposition (Acid Rain 2011), Beijing, China.
June 7, 2011 Dr. Yang Zhang and Ms. Ashley Penrod attended the Air Quality Program Project Directors’ Meeting for the USDA in Washington D.C. Dr. Zhang presented a poster entitled "3-D Agricultural Air Quality Modeling: The State Of The Science, Fine-Scale Applications, and Policy Implications. Part I. Impacts of Bidirectional Exchange of NH3 and Reactions involving NH3/H2S". Ashley presented a poster entitled "3-D Agricultural Air Quality Modeling: The State of the Science, Fine-Scale Applications, and Policy Implications Part II: Impacts of Future Climate and Emissions on Air Quality" that is based on her research.
April 2-10, 2011 Dr. Yang Zhang attended the European Geophysical Union Annual Meeting in Vienna, Austria (see photos taken at a dinner with conference session organizagers and colleagues at the EGU meeting and the Cathedral St. Stephan and Sissi Museum in downtown Vienna). She gave one invited presentation on Application of WRF/Chem-MADRID over Europe co-authored with
Y.-S. Chen, S.-Y. Wu, S. Zhu, K. Sartelet, P. Tran, and C. Seigneur and one oral/poster presentation on Intercomparison of WRF/Chem Simulations with Three Aerosol Modules over U.S. with Dr. Shuai Zhu as the first author at the EGU meeting. She also visited the Centre for Atmospheric and Instrumentation Research, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, U.K., for collaborative research on climate-air quality feedbacks and gave an ininvted seminar on regional air quality-climate modeling.

Dr. Jason Ching, from the Institute of the Environment at UNC, is going to give a topic on Modeling urban meteorology and air quality at fine scales and prototypic generation of sub-grid scale variability descriptions of CMAQ on Monday, Feb. 28.

Feb. 9-24, 2011

Dr. Naga Oshima visits AQFL for a new collaborative project during Feb. 9-24, 2011. He gave a speech on Vertical transport of black carbon over East Asia in spring during the A-FORCE aircraft campaign on Feb 11th. Dr. Naga Oshima is currently a Researcher at the Meteorological Research Institute, Japan Meteorological Agency, Japan.  He used to be a Visiting Scholar at MEAS, NCSU during Nov. 2005-Jan. 2006, and he conducted collaborative research on an integrated field and modeling study of the aging process of black carbon with Dr. Yang Zhang, which led to two collaborative publications on JGR-atmosphere.

Two AQFL members, Yaosheng Chen and Dr. Yang Zhang, attended the AMS 2011 Annual meeting in Seattle, WA. Yaosheng presented a poster based on his thesis research (see photo) . Dr. Zhang gave an oral presentation and a poster presentation. They both
attended the AMS Banquet (see photo) . As the chairperson of the Atmospheric Chemistry Committee of the AMS, she chaired the 13th Conference on Atmospheric Chemistry and the 3rd Symposium on Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interaction as part of the AMS 2011 Annual Meeting.

Together with Dr. Christian Seigneur, the Director of CEREA, Dr. Zhang visited Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH (FJG), Juelich, and Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC), Mainz, the two major research organizations in Germany. She gave a seminar on air quality and climate change at FJG and a seminar on review of nucleation parameterizations for new particle formation at MPIC.  Drs. Seigneur and Zhang also discussed potential collaboration with German colleagues.  See photo with Dr. Martin Schultz at FJG (see photo) and Dr. Mark Lawrence at MPIC (see photo).  They also visited the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg, the oldest University in Germany founded in 1386 and the fourth university established in the Holy Roman Empire (see photos).

Zongci Zhao and Yong Lou and discussed climate change in China (see photo). In Shanghai, she had dinner with Director Quan Zhang of Shanghai EPB and Dr. Dan Wu, Vice President of SJTU, and Dr. Yanqing Wu, Dean of School of Environmental Engineering and Science (see photo).

Nov. 6-14, 2009 Dr. Zhang visited Guangzhou and Shanghai, China. She gave one oral presentation and two training courses at the 2nd International Workshop on Regional Air Quality Management in Rapidly Developing Economic Regions Science, Challenges, and Solutions, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, November 9-10, 2009 (see Photos from the meeting).  She also gave an invited seminar at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou.

In Shanghai, as an international adviser appointed by the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, she attended the progress report meeting for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Ambient Air Quality Monitoring & Development of Air Pollution Forecasting Program.  She also visited Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) where Dr. Ping Liu, a former member of AQFL, teaches. During her visit, she met the Dean of the School of Environmental Science & Engineering to initiate a formal collaboration between NCSU and SJTU and discuss potential collaborations on research and student education. She was formally appointed as an honorable Professor of SJTU during the same trip.

July 1 - August 9, 2009 Mr. Bin Zhao, a senior undergraduate student from Tsinghua University visited AQFL under the NCSU-Tsinghua University Visiting Scholar Program and conducted research on evaluation of a real-time air quality forecasting modeling system developed by AQFL.  Bin gave an oral presentation at the 2009 NCSU Symposium on the Summer Research Experience, Raleigh, NC. June 17-26, 2009 Dr. Zhang gave an invited presentation at the joint workshop of EMEP’s Task Force on Measurements and Modeling (TFMM) and the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution (TF HTAP), Paris, France.  She also gave an oral presentation at the Goldschmidt 2009, Davos, Switzerland.  She met several colleagues including Drs. June 4 - July 7, 2009 Dr. Zhang visited several universities/research organizations in China and France to give 6 invited seminars/training lectures and discuss potential collaborations. These include Tsinghua University (See photo), Peking University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, and the University of Paris.  She met the Director of Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB), Mr. Quan Zhang, and the Chief for Division of International Cooperation and Science and Technology of Shanghai EPB, Ms. Jue Wang. (See photo) She has been appointed by the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center as an international adviser for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Ambient Air Quality Monitoring & Development of Air Pollution Forecasting System. May 29, 2009 Kristen Olsen has graduated with her master's degree and has completed her work at N.C. State.  Kristen is moving to Virginia where she will begin her career with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.  Congratulations and good luck to Kristen.
May 18-22, 2009 Dr. Zhang gave three oral presentations at the 30th NATO/SPS International Technical Meeting on Air Pollution Modelling and its Application, San Francisco, CA.  She also visited AER, Inc. that has been relocated in San Francisco and met several former colleagues including Dr. Prakash Karamchandani, Mr. Krish Vijayaraghavan, and Dr. Betty Bun.  She also visited Dr. Mark Jacobson at Stanford University to discuss existing projects and future collaborations.  See photos.

June 13, 2008 Dr. Zhang published a review paper entitled “Online coupled meteorology and chemistry models: history, current status, and outlook” on Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry. Her talk was entitled "Development and Application of A Computationally-Efficient MADRID 2 for Simulating Secondary Organic Aerosol."
February 5, 2008 Dr. David Sands, Prof. of Montana State University and Dr. Cindy Morris of INRA in Avignon France, were the presenter for a Special Seminar hosted by Dr. Yang Zhang. Their topic was titled, "The microbes in the air, their ability to nucleate ice crystals, and their possible roles in meteorological events." The seminar extended beyond the presentation, leading into discussions of future collaborations and project directions.

January 20-24, 2008 Dr. Xinyu Wen and Ying Pan both received the NASA/Tropospheric Chemistry Program Travel Award to attend the 88th AMS Annual Meeting, 20-24 Jan., in New Orleans, LA.

Dr. Jiming Hao, Professor and Dean of the Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, China, a prestigious member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, visited and gave a seminar at NCSU.  His talk was on Introduction of Research Programs on Air Pollution and Control in Tsinghua University.  Colleagues from NCSU and EPA joined the roundtable to discuss the environmental issues in China and how to address the challenges.  All AQFL members had a group meeting with Prof. Hao after the seminar. Prof. Kebin He from Tsinghua University gave a seminar titled "Regional Air Pollution Complex in City Clusters of China", and Mr. Satoru Chatani from Japan Petroleum Energy Center gave a seminar titled "Multi-scale Air Quality Study in Japan Clean Air Program (JCAP)" in MEAS, hosted by Dr. Yang Zhang and A&WMA NCSU Student Chapter. October 1-3, 2007 Five Air Quality Forecasting Lab members including a former member attended the 6th Annual CMAS meeting in Chapel Hill, NC. Dr. Zhang's talk was titled, "Simulating Climate-Chemistry-Aerosol-Cloud-Radiation Feedbacks in WRF/Chem: Model Development and Initial Application". Our Alumni, Chris Misenis's talk was titled, "An Examination of WRF/Chem: Physical Schemes, Nesting Options, and Grid Resolutions". Xiaoming Hu and Ping Liu gave the poster presentations on their research, and Evelyn Frazier is the co-author of Xiaoming's work. Xiaoming's poster was titled, "Evaluation of WRF/Chem-MADRID with the July 2004 New England Air Quality Study Episode", and Ping's poster was titled, "Development and Application of A Computationally-Efficient MADRID 2 for Simulating Secondary Organic Aerosol".

Dr. Zhang was invited as lecturer for the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (ISAC) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) summer school of Joining transport and chemistry in air pollution modeling at different scales in Castro Marina (Lecce), Italy.

June 23-July 5 , 2007 Xiaoming Hu visited National University of Mexico (also called UNAM), Mexico City. He worked with Drs. Baumgardner, Graciela, Diana and Master student Carlos to set up WRF/Chem simulation for the Salina Cruz case. During his visit, he had a meeting with Drs. Baumgardner, Jazcilevich, Garcia to know their ongoing research. Xiaoming also gave an informal seminar titled "Model Development and Initial Application of WRF/Chem-MADRID"
June 11-July 5, 2007 Dr. Yang Zhang visited several universities/research organizations including Shan Dong University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, and National Climate Center in China.  During her visit, she gave five seminars on various topics and discussed areas of potential collaboration with Chinese colleagues.
11-15 June 2007 Xiaoming Hu attended the 8th Annual WRF User’s Workshop , Boulder, CO. He gave a talk titled "Gas/Particle Mass Transfer Treatments in WRF/Chem-MADRID: Development, Application, and Evaluation"
June 8, 2007 Chris Misenis, an MS graduate of AQFL, has successfully landed a job at North Carolina Division of Air Quality.  He will start as a Meteorologist on July 9, 2007.
May 10, 2007 Mr. Wenxin Yu from Peking University will join AQFL as a visiting post-D researcher after he obtains a PhD degree in Atmospheric Sciences in July 2007.  He will start at NCSU on August 1, 2007.
14-16 May 2007 Kai Wang, a Ph.D. student in AQFL, attended the 10th International Conference on Atmospheric Sciences and Applications to Air Quality (ASAAQ), Hong Kong, China. His talk was titled, "A Mechanistic Examination of Asian Pollution Export: Process Analysis, Sensitivity Simulation, and Satellite Data Utilization"
April 28, 2007 Dr. Yongxin Zhang from Los Alamos National Laboratory accepted the post-D researcher position at AQFL.  He will join AQFL on Sept. 15, 2007.
April 15, 2007  Srinath Krishnan, an MS graduate of AQFL, has been offered a PhD position with a full RA by Yale University, starting summer, 2007.
April 13, 2007 Ms. Ying Pan, an MS graduate from Peking University, has accepted AQFL's offer as a PhD student.  She will join AQFL in early August, 2007.
April 10, 2007 Ms. Evelyn Frazier, a BS graduate from MEAS, NCSU, has accepted AQFL's offer as an MS student.  She has also been accepted by NCSU's Bridging Program and will start on May 29.
April 5, 2007 Dr. Litao Wang, an Air Quality modeler at Tsinghua University, will visit NCSU and work on an EPA-sponsored project on modeling of air quality in China during the period of June 6-Nov. 5.
March 30, 2007 Ashley Queen, an MS graduate of AQFL, has successfully landed a job at Trinity Consultants, Dallas, TX.  She will start her position as an Environmental Consultant on June 4, 2007.
April 23, 2007 Evelyn Frazier received the following awards: SAAPAMS 1st Award for Dedication and Service, Senior and Senior Service Awards, and the PEACE Leadership Award.
March 20, 2007 Dr. Ralph Cicerone, President of National Academy of Sciences, and world-recognized expert on Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Change, visited NCSU and MEAS faculty and graduate students to discuss atmospheric chemistry and climate research. Dr. Zhang and Mr. Xiaoming Hu represented the Air Quality Forecasting Lab and attended the lunch meeting.
March 19, 2007 For her presentation at the 87th Annual AMS meeting in San Antonio, Texas, Ashley Queen was awarded a first place prize for student presentations. She was awarded a certificate and cash prize.
February 19, 2007 Dr. Jose Fuentes, distinguished professor in the the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia, visited NCSU and the AQFL. His seminar was titled, "Emissions, Turbulent Transport, and Chemistry of Photogenic Hydrocarbons."

Dr. Zhang and Ashley Queen both presented research, with Dr. Zhang also presenting research on behalf of Ping Liu. Dr. Zhang's talk was titled, "Assessment of Long-Term Impacts of Regional Climate Changes on Air Quality." Ashleys presentation was titled, "Examining the Sensitivity of Meteorology and Chemical Predictions to Explicit Microphysics Schemes." Ping's presentation was titled, "Simulating Secondary Organic Aerosol: Accurary versus Computational Efficiency."
